Online Gaming Act 2025: what it means for gaming apps in India
The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 now sits behind a central framework that distinguishes prohibited online money games from e-sports and online social games. A “skill game” label, old FAQ or working APK does not decide the category.
The Government of India states that the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules, 2026 came into force on 1 May 2026. What the Act changes for app directories and APK pages
Older gaming pages can become materially stale if they still rely on pre-August 2025 state-by-state summaries, repeat “game of skill” as a complete answer, or treat technical availability as permission. A current page needs to test the exact product against the central framework and the 2026 classification process.

- Identify the exact product, operator and money/reward mechanics.
- Obtain written classification evidence for India; do not infer from a competitor page.
- Check whether the intended text constitutes advertising, promotion, facilitation or payment enablement.
- Review the APK independently using the package, hash and signature checklist.
- Record the responsible reviewer and next legal-review date.
- If status remains unresolved, label the source clearly and do not add deposit, bonus or play claims.

- Never interpret a successful deposit or download as proof that the service is permitted.
- Preserve screenshots, transaction references and policy versions when disputing a claim.
